A new update has emerged regarding the highly anticipated film ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,’ the long-awaited sequel from Mel Gibson.

Reports indicate that Gibson has unveiled the first look at the movie, which serves as a follow-up to his 2004 film ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ It has also been confirmed that filming for the project has concluded. The production reportedly spanned 134 days and was filmed in various locations across Italy, including Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi, and Matera.

Despite the completion of filming, the release schedule has been altered. The movie is now being divided into two parts, both of which have experienced delays. ‘Part One’ was initially set for March 26, 2027, but is now slated for May 6, 2027. ‘Part Two’ has also been postponed, moving from May 6, 2027, to May 25, 2028.

Both films are expected to premiere on Ascension Day, a Christian holiday commemorating the belief in Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven.

Gibson discussed the project in a statement to the media, expressing his gratitude to the talented cast and crew for their dedication. He stated, “I’m deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful.” He further added, “This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”

The film continues the narrative established in ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ which depicted the final hours of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. The sequel is expected to delve into the resurrection of Jesus, expanding that story on a grander scale.

The new films will feature Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus and Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene. Additional cast members include Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett.

According to Deadline, Gibson has been collaborating with writer Randall Wallace on the script for several years. The filmmaker has previously described the project as intense and unique, noting that he has “never read anything like” the scripts.

The original ‘The Passion of the Christ’ was a massive box office hit, grossing over $600 million worldwide on a budget of about $30 million, making it one of the most successful independent films ever produced.

The new project will be distributed by Lionsgate in North America and the UK, with various international partners managing releases in different regions worldwide.

Lionsgate executive Adam Fogelson praised the film, stating, “Mel is a true visionary with an artist’s eye for scale and a storyteller’s instinct for emotional truth.” He added, “Every image we’ve seen from set feels like a masterwork painting brought to life.”

Gibson’s return to major studio filmmaking follows several years away from large productions. His last film was ‘Flight Risk,’ and prior to that, he directed notable films like ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ ‘Apocalypto,’ and ‘Braveheart.’
