Rockstar Games has been building excitement for its next mainline entry, and each new detail that emerges only heightens expectations. With ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ set to release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the studio has begun to share insights into the depth of its new systems.

This deeper look came through a recent interview with Dazed, which unveiled several significant gameplay and world-building elements ahead of the game’s launch. Much of the discussion focused on the dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, who are central to ‘GTA 6’s’ narrative, and how Rockstar has significantly enhanced the systems that govern their world.

One of the most notable features is a dynamic character-switching mechanic that allows players to alternate between Jason and Lucia during gameplay. This enables them to tackle missions together or split up to pursue different objectives. This system builds on concepts introduced in ‘GTA V,’ but with much greater flexibility in how the two protagonists interact throughout the story.

Rockstar has also confirmed a detailed physical appearance system that directly reflects how players treat both characters. Overeating leads to weight gain, while exercising builds visible muscle and helps them maintain a leaner physique. Additionally, neglecting sleep or staying constantly on the run will visibly alter how Jason and Lucia appear over time. This system echoes what Rockstar previously implemented in ‘Red Dead Redemption 2,’ but on a scale not seen since ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ in 2004.

The environment surrounding these characters has been crafted with an exceptional commitment to realism. Rockstar has reportedly dedicated an entire internal branch to NPC creation, resulting in what the studio describes as its most detailed and diverse non-player character population to date, with virtual residents responding more naturally to events in the game world. This includes smaller details, such as in-game phones and an integrated social media system woven into the world.

Vice City draws heavily from extensive research into Miami and its culture. In the Dazed interview, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, Ruper Humphries, explained that the team studied Miami’s music scene, from Miami bass to contemporary artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red, examining how hip-hop culture permeates various spaces across the city, from house parties in Overtown to high-end South Beach venues. “We needed characters who could take us through those worlds,” Humphries shared with Dazed.

This research went beyond music, with Rockstar consulting ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers, and local Miami residents during development. Over 50 real street artists contributed murals that will be featured throughout the game. The fashion system has also seen significant enhancements, with clothing designed around specific characters, lifestyles, and locations instead of a generic catalog.

Additionally, Rockstar consulted real-life race car drivers to refine vehicle handling, aiming to balance the chaotic energy of ‘GTA V’ with the grounded immersion players experienced in ‘Red Dead Redemption 2.’ The development team has more than doubled in size since completing ‘Red Dead Redemption 2,’ reflecting the immense scale of a project reportedly in the works since 2013.

With over a decade of development and new details continuing to emerge ahead of November’s release, ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious open-world games Rockstar has ever created.
