Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Set to Break Records Ahead of Ticket Sales
Zach Cregger has quietly emerged as one of the most bankable names in horror, transforming original, unsettling narratives into box office hits. From the slow-burn tension of ‘Barbarian’ to last year’s Oscar-nominated sensation ‘Weapons,’ which grossed $270 million globally from a $43.5 million domestic opening, Cregger has crafted a directorial brand that studios eagerly want to associate with established franchises.
Now, that brand faces a significant challenge. Cregger’s reimagining of ‘Resident Evil’ is set to hit theaters on September 18, marking his first foray into adapting existing intellectual property after a series of acclaimed original works. The film centers on Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by ‘Weapons’ star Austin Abrams, who finds himself ensnared in a nightmare after a delivery goes awry.
With tickets going on sale next week, early tracking indicates that Cregger’s risk is paying off. According to new data from The Quorum’s eight-week tracking chart, shared by Puck, ‘Resident Evil’ boasts 51% awareness and 52% interest, the highest metrics for any film currently on the board, approximately six weeks ahead of its release.
These figures carry significant weight in the industry. The Quorum’s analysis suggests that Cregger may be emerging as a true “butts-in-seats” filmmaker, with the reboot achieving new highs across all tracking metrics, particularly among men under 35. For context, that 52% interest figure reportedly exceeds where Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ stood eleven days before its release, a film that ultimately opened to $120.5 million domestically.
Cregger has consistently articulated his creative vision for the material during the film’s promotional campaign. He describes the movie as a “relentless” horror gauntlet and emphasizes that the story exists outside the video games’ events, rather than retelling any specific installment. Previously, Cregger expressed his admiration for the games while asserting that he is crafting an original narrative that respects the established lore without adapting a character arc familiar to fans.
This distinction is crucial, given the franchise’s inconsistent cinematic history. The original 2002 ‘Resident Evil’ film featuring Milla Jovovich holds a mere 35% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a more favorable 67% audience score. Similarly, the recent ‘Welcome to Raccoon City’ reboot received lukewarm reviews from critics. Cregger’s version seems poised to break from this trend, focusing on his signature blend of intimate character development and genuine dread rather than the action-heavy tone that characterized the Jovovich-led films.
Sony currently boasts two of the most anticipated titles on the tracking chart, with ‘Resident Evil’ leading and the studio’s own ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ following at 47% awareness and 48% interest. This positions the studio for a rare one-two horror punch as the fall season approaches, with both films significantly outperforming others on the board, including the family sequel ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,’ which has had a considerably longer lead time on the release calendar.
Box Office Pro’s separate forecasting predicts ‘Resident Evil’ could open to between $30 million and $40 million during its debut weekend, numbers that would signify a robust relaunch for a franchise that has struggled to maintain consistent critical and commercial success in recent years. With such strong tracking numbers before tickets have even officially gone on sale, Cregger’s reboot appears set to become one of the biggest horror openings of the year.
