‘Practical Magic 2’ New Look Reveals the Owens Sisters’ Journey to Break Their Curse
Nearly three decades after captivating audiences with midnight margaritas and a troublesome curse, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning to the world that made them cult favorites. The original 1998 film may have faced criticism and box office challenges at the time, but it has since evolved into a cherished cult classic that only grows more beloved with age.
This enduring affection has finally resulted in a proper sequel, which has been generating excitement since Warner Bros. confirmed the project was in development back in June 2024. What began with a cryptic incantation-style teaser has now transformed into a comprehensive marketing campaign as the film’s release date approaches.
The latest addition to that campaign is a new poster featuring Bullock and Kidman standing back to back as their characters Sally and Gillian Owens, confirming the film’s theatrical release for September 10. Directed by Susanne Bier, the sequel is based on a later installment of Alice Hoffman’s ‘Practical Magic’ book series, continuing the saga of the Owens family’s long-standing connection with witchcraft and love curses.
The returning cast resembles a genuine reunion of the original’s key players. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are both back as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, joining Bullock and Kidman in reprising the roles that first defined the franchise nearly 30 years ago.
New faces in the ensemble include Joey King and Maisie Williams portraying Sally’s daughters, along with Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod rounding out the expanded cast. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the screenplay for the original film, returns to pen the sequel as well, establishing a direct creative link to the story’s earliest roots.

Bullock and Kidman have both expressed fondness for their characters over the years, even in light of the original’s mixed critical reception. Speaking to Rolling Stone about the iconic midnight margaritas scene, Bullock remarked, “‘Hollywood’ made the movie and fully leaned into it. They may have regretted it once we got eviscerated, but they were brave enough to make it back then, so for that I am so grateful,” while Kidman added, “I just remember loving the film. I won’t be pulled off it if I love it. And I love it!”
The sequel’s marketing has embraced the same tone of moonlit mischief and ancestral magic that characterized the original, with early trailer footage hinting at a dark curse threatening to unravel the Owens family once and for all. This framing suggests that the follow-up will delve deeper into the family’s magical lineage rather than merely revisiting familiar territory.
Bullock, Kidman, and returning original producer Denise Di Novi are all producing the sequel together, providing a level of creative continuity that fans of the first film should find reassuring. With the September 10 release date now confirmed and fresh promotional material being unveiled, the wait for the Owens sisters’ return is finally entering its final stretch.
