Richard Gadd reveals that the conclusion of ‘Half Man’ was intentionally crafted to leave viewers pondering rather than providing clear answers. After six weeks of gripping episodes, the finale unveiled the events that transpired between Ruben and Niall inside the locked barn during Niall’s wedding day. Even after the shocking final moments, Gadd aimed for audiences to reflect on the story long after the credits rolled.

In an interview with Variety, Gadd noted that the ending sparked extensive discussion among those who watched early previews of the show. Viewers were eager to dissect the final moments and their deeper implications.

However, Gadd refrained from offering a straightforward explanation for every detail. He shared with Variety, “I like that the ending is a little ambiguous.” He believes that storytelling should allow audiences to derive their own interpretations from what they view.

The finale focuses on Ruben uncovering Niall’s heartbreaking secret. Ruben discovers that Niall had an affair with his wife years ago and may be the biological father of Ruben’s son. This revelation devastates Ruben emotionally and drives him towards violence.

The intense fight scene between Ruben and Niall unfolds in a secluded barn in the Scottish countryside. Gadd mentioned to Variety that filming this sequence was physically demanding, with he and co-star Jamie Bell shooting the scenes over three days in an abandoned barn.

Gadd praised Bell for his commitment to the intense scenes, stating, “We really went for it. He is a real trooper.” Gadd humorously added that his elbows and wrists were sore after filming due to the rigorous fight choreography.

The death scene was meticulously planned from the outset. Gadd explained that Ruben killing Niall with his bare hands was always intended to be part of the script, aiming for the murder to feel personal and emotionally charged rather than quick or arbitrary.

Gadd elaborated that Ruben feels utterly humiliated upon learning the truth about Niall and his wife. He indicated that Ruben’s masculinity and pride are shattered by this betrayal, leading him to believe that violence is the only way to reclaim control.

He remarked, “The only way Ruben can get back his dominance is to kill him in the most masculine and domineering way as possible.”

Many viewers observed that Ruben’s method of killing Niall differed from his earlier violent encounters in the series. Throughout the show, Ruben often brutally stomps on his victims, but with Niall, the murder appears more deliberate and slow.

Gadd clarified that this portrayal of violence was calculated rather than purely emotional, indicating that Ruben’s actions in the finale were thoroughly considered.

Niall’s death occurring on his wedding day also carries significant meaning. Weddings typically symbolize joy and new beginnings, but Gadd aimed to subvert that notion. He explained that Ruben could not accept the idea of Niall having a happy ending while his own life was in shambles.

One of the most discussed moments in the finale is the very last shot. After killing Niall, Ruben gazes down at the body and emits a strange grunt before the screen abruptly cuts to black.

Fans have interpreted this moment in various ways. Some believe Ruben suddenly realizes he is heading back to prison, while others think he is overwhelmed by his actions. Gadd declined to provide a definitive explanation for the scene.

He told Variety, “I think that it can be interpreted in many different ways.”

Gadd also expressed his aversion to neat and tidy endings in television. He believes that real life seldom offers perfect closure, and he wanted ‘Half Man’ to mirror that reality.

He stated, “I don’t think happy endings, or even conclusive endings, are really true to life.”

According to Gadd, the absence of clear answers is intentional. He believes that the ongoing debates about Ruben’s fate after the finale indicate that the story continues to resonate with viewers.

For Gadd, concluding the show with uncertainty felt organic. As he told Variety, “It just felt like the right way to end a show like this.”
