Robert Downey Jr. Reveals What Kept Him Connected to the MCU After Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr.’s departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was thought to be final. Tony Stark’s demise in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ concluded one of the most cherished character arcs in cinematic history, and for a long time, Downey appeared genuinely finished with the role that catapulted him to global fame.
However, the years following Stark’s sacrifice and Downey’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom were not as disconnected from Marvel as fans might think. In a recent exclusive interview, Downey shared the surprising link that kept him connected to the franchise, even while Tony Stark remained deceased.
As reported by CBR, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that ‘WandaVision’ maintained his connection to the MCU during the years he spent away from portraying Tony Stark. This insight emerged during an exclusive discussion with journalist Sean O’Connell, who spoke with Downey and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ director Joe Russo about Downey’s complete journey through the franchise, from the original ‘Iron Man’ to his upcoming role as Doctor Doom.
‘WandaVision’ was Marvel Studios’ inaugural Disney+ series, debuting in 2021 as a sitcom-inspired mystery that followed Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff as she navigated her grief after losing Vision, played by Paul Bettany. The series delved into Tony Stark’s legacy in ways few other post-‘Endgame’ projects have, examining both his technology and his complex influence on the characters left behind.
This connection to Stark’s world seems to be what Downey found significant during his time away from the suit. The interview outlines Downey’s journey from the original ‘Iron Man’ in 2008 through his participation in team-up sequels and mentoring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, culminating in his sacrifice in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ with ‘WandaVision’ serving as an unexpected link that kept Stark’s presence alive in the MCU, even without Downey physically appearing on screen.

Downey’s actual return to the franchise was one of the most significant surprises in recent Marvel history. He will appear not as Tony Stark but as Doctor Doom in the highly anticipated ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a casting decision that shocked fans when it was first revealed and has sparked countless theories about how the two characters might ultimately connect within the multiverse.
This new interview coincides with a truly monumental period for the franchise. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is currently shattering box office records in theaters, while Marvel Studios continues to build toward the future with its upcoming X-Men reboot and David Jonsson stepping into a new Black Panther role.
Fans will soon have another opportunity to revisit Stark’s original sacrifice on the big screen. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is set to return to theaters in September as part of an Encore presentation, reportedly featuring additional footage that helps set up ‘Doomsday,’ giving audiences one last chance to bid farewell to Tony Stark before Downey reappears as Marvel’s next major antagonist.
With ‘Doomsday’ generating excitement ahead of its release, Downey’s remarks about ‘WandaVision’ provide a small yet revealing insight into how Tony Stark’s legacy remained present in his thoughts, even during the years when many believed he had completely moved on.
