Marvel Studios has truly perfected the art of transforming fan speculation into a marketing phenomenon, and few actors engage with that concept as effectively as Ryan Reynolds. Over the past year, he has kept fans on their toes with cameo hints and enigmatic social media posts regarding the possible appearances of Deadpool and Wolverine in the studio’s upcoming crossover event.

The excitement reached new heights at D23 when Marvel kicked off its segment on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with a video message from Hugh Jackman instead of showcasing new footage. In the clip, Jackman directly appealed to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, suggesting he could help complete the cast and hinted that he could persuade Reynolds to join him. Reynolds later shared this video on his Instagram, humorously labeling it a “hostage video” to play into the joke.

Now, Reynolds is addressing that moment head-on. While on the red carpet for his new film ‘Mayday,’ he responded to questions about his and Jackman’s push for Deadpool and Wolverine to be included in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ He described the situation as crazy, adding that he meant what he said and jokingly inquired if that answer was vague enough.

This kind of intentionally ambiguous response aligns with a pattern Reynolds has maintained for months regarding his character’s role in the upcoming film. He has previously claimed he hasn’t even been on the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set, despite ongoing reports suggesting otherwise, and continues to share suggestive social media content and make public appearances that only heighten speculation rather than clarify it.

The D23 event was not an isolated incident either. Just weeks earlier at San Diego Comic-Con, Reynolds made a surprise appearance at Marvel’s Hall H panel dressed as Deadpool, inquiring about the filming schedule, only for Robert Downey Jr. to respond that the movie was already completed. This recurring gag at two of Marvel’s major promotional events in quick succession has led many fans to interpret the routine as unofficial confirmation, even though Marvel has yet to formally announce either actor’s participation.

Neither Jackman nor Reynolds has confirmed their roles in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and Marvel Studios has remained publicly silent on the subject as well. Given how the studio managed Andrew Garfield’s repeated denials before his surprise appearance in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ there is a well-established precedent for actors intentionally misleading fans to safeguard a reveal.

With Deadpool and Wolverine having collectively grossed $1.3 billion in their 2024 collaboration, it makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective to keep their potential involvement under wraps for as long as possible. Whether this is indeed the case or if Reynolds is merely enjoying the ambiguity remains uncertain.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ scheduled for release on December 18 and the film’s cast list still officially incomplete according to Marvel, there is ample opportunity for an official announcement or a surprise reveal on the big screen itself.
