Sam Levinson Defends Controversial Character Death in ‘Euphoria’ Season 3
The creator of ‘Euphoria’, Sam Levinson, has addressed the contentious death of a key character in the latest season of the show.
In a shocking and graphic episode, Jacob Elordi’s character Nate Jacobs meets his end in a harrowing sequence. The scene depicts him being buried alive and subsequently attacked by a rattlesnake, culminating in the recovery of his body. This moment quickly became one of the most talked-about aspects of the season due to its extreme and unsettling nature.
Levinson explained that the decision was influenced by audience expectations, aiming to provide viewers with what they desire while also inducing discomfort. He elaborated on the challenge of balancing satisfaction with shock, stating, “How can I give [fans] what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?”
He further noted that the intention behind the scene was to prompt viewers to reflect on their own reactions to the character’s demise. Levinson remarked, “It’s like, ‘Oh, you wanted him to get his comeuppance…? OK,’” highlighting the show’s exploration of justice and consequences.
Levinson also described the emotional tone behind crafting such a dark scene. Despite the intensity of the death, he clarified that the creative process did not stem from a dark personal place, as he conceived ideas for the scene while feeling calm and collected, showcasing how storytelling can emerge from unexpected moments.
Jacob Elordi, who portrays Nate Jacobs, shared his perspective in a separate HBO interview, describing the death scene as a “cool way to go” for his character. He reflected on Nate’s journey throughout the series, noting that the character had made numerous mistakes and that this ending felt like a fitting conclusion to his arc.

Elordi has been a part of ‘Euphoria’ since its debut in 2019, with Nate Jacobs remaining one of the show’s most complex and controversial figures throughout its run. His final scene marks a significant turning point in the narrative, removing a central character from the series.
This creative choice has ignited strong reactions among viewers, with many debating whether the death was satisfying or excessively extreme. The show is known for pushing boundaries, and this moment continues that trend by merging shock value with emotional storytelling.
Levinson aimed to evoke a response that transcends mere approval or disapproval, encouraging viewers to ponder their own expectations. The outcome is a scene that has become one of the most discussed moments of the season, notable for both its intensity and narrative significance.
