Sicily’s ‘Odyssey’ Tourism Boom Expected to Surpass ‘White Lotus’ Revenue
Prestige television and blockbuster films have quietly emerged as powerful tourism drivers, transforming serene coastal towns into must-visit spots almost overnight. Sicily is now preparing for a significant surge in tourism, following a trend it has experienced before.
Italian media has dubbed this phenomenon the “Nolan effect,” highlighting the extensive influence of Christopher Nolan in turning filming locations into travel destinations. This time, the focus is on a small island that many travelers were unaware of until recently.
Favignana, located off Sicily’s west coast, served as Ithaca, the legendary home of Odysseus, in Nolan’s high-budget adaptation ‘The Odyssey.’ Following the film’s release, the island has seen a remarkable influx of tourists, prompting local officials to prepare for the increased interest.
Nicola Tarantino, head of the Sicilia Film Commission, confirmed this shift, sharing with Variety his expectations for a notable rise in international tourism, particularly from the United States. He also drew parallels to a previous surge triggered by HBO’s ‘The White Lotus,’ which filmed its second season in the Sicilian resort town of Taormina in 2022.
According to estimates from La Repubblica, that season has generated around 138 million euros, approximately $158 million, in tourism revenue for Taormina. However, the ‘Odyssey’ effect is anticipated to significantly exceed this figure. Early estimates suggest that Favignana could bring in about $287 million over the next three years, with projections exceeding $500 million in the long term, more than double what Taormina experienced from its own tourism boom.

The connection between the film and Favignana goes beyond just being a filming site. Nolan and production designer Ruth De Jong identified the 15th-century Castello di Santa Caterina on the island as the ideal stand-in for Ithaca’s royal palace, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.
Favignana isn’t the only Italian location associated with the production. Portions of ‘The Odyssey’ were also filmed across Sicily’s Eolian islands and near Ostia, providing several unique cinematic locations that are now attracting travelers eager to follow in Odysseus’s footsteps.
Sicily has demonstrated its ability to leverage such attention effectively. Beyond the film and television tourism boom, the region recently experienced a significant economic boost from Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s viral wedding in Palermo, which generated approximately $17 million in economic activity almost instantly.
For a relatively obscure island like Favignana, this level of exposure signifies a remarkable transformation. If initial projections hold true, what began as a filming location for a mythological epic could reshape the island’s economic future long after the movie’s theatrical run has ended.
