Late August typically marks a slow period at the box office, often seen as a dumping ground for smaller genre films before the fall season kicks off. However, this year, Sony is transforming that usually quiet weekend into a significant success.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already dominated theaters for three weekends, achieving impressive numbers that have caught the industry’s attention. Now, Sony is introducing a second release designed for this late-summer horror slot.

As reported by Variety, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further‘ has garnered $3 million in Thursday previews, setting it up for a projected opening weekend between $23 million and $27 million. This would place it in second place at the weekend box office, behind the $2 billion blockbuster ‘Brand New Day.’ With this lineup, Sony is poised to hold both the number one and number two positions at the box office, as ‘Brand New Day’ is expected to add another $35 million to $40 million in its fourth weekend.

The preview earnings for ‘Out of the Further’ are noticeably lower than its predecessor. Its $3 million Thursday total is below the $5 million previews earned by 2023’s ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ which opened at $33 million domestically and concluded its run with $189 million worldwide.

Part of this difference can be attributed to star power. ‘The Red Door’ featured original franchise leads Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, who also directed that installment. In contrast, ‘Out of the Further’ brings back only Lin Shaye from earlier films, while Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers take on new roles. The story follows a mother named Gemma who can travel into the Further, a realm of lost souls, inadvertently opening a door for its inhabitants to enter the real world.

Despite the softer previews, the film’s financial outlook remains strong. ‘Out of the Further’ has a relatively modest production budget of $18 million, and the Insidious franchise has collectively grossed $740 million globally since the original film’s release in 2011. This means that even a smaller opening weekend won’t significantly impact the series’ consistently profitable history.

This weekend also sees other new wide releases vying for attention. Jason Statham’s action thriller ‘Mutiny’ opened with $700,000 in its Thursday previews and is tracking for an $8 million to $10 million debut, while the comedy ‘Spa Weekend,’ featuring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, and Anna Faris, is aiming for $3 million to $5 million.

Even with two new releases entering the market, neither is expected to pose a serious challenge to ‘Brand New Day’ for the top position. The sequel, led by Tom Holland and Zendaya, concluded its third weekend with a total of $100.1 million across over 4,500 theaters, showing a stronger third-week hold than ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the same point, only trailing behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ among recent blockbuster benchmarks.

With ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ debuting in approximately 2,700 to 3,300 North American theaters and ‘Brand New Day’ still attracting audiences a month into its release, this weekend serves as another testament to Sony’s summer dominance, even during a time typically reserved for smaller, quieter releases.
