‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Set to Become Third Highest-Grossing Movie Ever
Some box office runs fade quickly after their opening weekend buzz wears off, while others continue to climb week after week, transforming numbers into historic milestones.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has firmly established itself in the latter category. Since its theatrical debut at the end of July, Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has been rewriting box office records, and its journey is nearing its final chapter.
New projections indicate that the film is expected to conclude its theatrical run with a global total between $2.5 billion and $2.6 billion. This impressive figure would position it as the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, not adjusted for inflation, with only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ above it on the all-time chart.
The film’s staying power has been the defining narrative of its release. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ opened with a record-breaking $360 million domestic weekend, achieving the biggest global opening in Sony’s history and the second-fastest climb to $1 billion worldwide in franchise history.
Its momentum has not only been about speed; it became the eighth film ever to cross $2 billion globally, accomplishing this feat in just 17 days. Since August, it has consistently been the top-grossing release in theaters, with the exception of one day when it briefly lost the crown to a new horror release. Domestically, it currently ranks second on the all-time chart, trailing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ by a narrowing margin that many analysts expect it to close within weeks.
Surpassing ‘The Force Awakens’ domestically would make ‘Brand New Day’ the highest-grossing film ever released in North America, a milestone that once seemed reserved for franchises with decades of cultural dominance. Globally, however, catching ‘Avatar’s’ nearly $3 billion total appears less likely, leaving the film’s ceiling at third place worldwide unless its theatrical run is unexpectedly extended.

Even without reaching the very top, joining ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as only the third film ever to cross the $2.5 billion threshold places ‘Brand New Day’ in rare company. This level of box office dominance is something few franchises achieve, especially in a fourth installment featuring the same lead actor.

For Sony and Marvel, the film’s performance signifies a career-defining moment not only for the franchise but also for Holland, who has now led two billion-dollar Spider-Man releases in just five years. It also highlights the audience’s enduring appetite for theatrical blockbusters when a film captures genuine cultural momentum rather than relying solely on franchise branding.
As ‘Brand New Day’ approaches the end of its theatrical run in the coming weeks, all eyes will be on whether it can officially dethrone ‘The Force Awakens’ domestically before leaving theaters entirely. Regardless, its final tally is set to become one of the defining box office stories of the decade, proving that even in an era of shrinking theatrical windows, the right film can still make moviegoing an event.
