Box office records often seem unbreakable, but the domestic total of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has remained untouched for over a decade, leading many industry analysts to believe it would never be challenged. That belief is now being put to the test.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ debuted with a staggering $360 million domestically, immediately establishing itself as one of the largest theatrical openings in history. Instead of following the usual post-opening decline, the film has continued to break records week after week, becoming the fastest film to surpass $500 million domestically in just seven days, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

This relentless success has placed an even greater milestone within reach. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is on track to become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history, poised to overtake the 11-year-old record of $936.6 million set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in 2015.

The film’s second weekend alone generated approximately $143 million, marking the third-largest sophomore weekend ever, trailing only ‘The Force Awakens’ at $149.2 million and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $147 million. With $655 million already accumulated in North America after just ten days, ‘Brand New Day’ has outperformed any other film at this stage in its run when adjusted for inflation.

The excitement surrounding this potential milestone is driven not only by the film’s impressive debut but also by its consistent performance beyond the opening weekend. Industry analysts have noted that to surpass ‘The Force Awakens’ total, the film needs to maintain a multiplier of about 2.6 times its opening weekend figures, a considerably achievable target compared to what ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ needed to reach similar heights back in 2021.

This sustained strength during weekdays and weekends has become a hallmark of the film’s run. ‘Brand New Day’ set records for the biggest opening Monday and Tuesday in box office history and followed up with robust Wednesday and Thursday figures, helping it reach the half-billion mark faster than any prior film, including heavyweights like ‘Endgame’ and even ‘The Force Awakens’ itself.

Surpassing ‘The Force Awakens’ domestic total would already be a monumental achievement, but some analysts are eyeing an even more ambitious goal of $1 billion domestically, a milestone no film has ever achieved in North America alone. To reach that mark, it would need to exceed ‘The Force Awakens’ total by over $63 million, a figure that once seemed unrealistic but now appears increasingly attainable given the film’s current trajectory.

For perspective, ‘The Force Awakens’ has maintained its position at the top of the domestic charts since 2015, a record that has survived challenges from major Marvel releases, subsequent ‘Star Wars’ films, and other blockbuster hits over the past decade. A film finally dethroning it would signify a significant shift in modern box office history, particularly coming from a franchise entry rather than a new cinematic universe launch.

With no significant competition on the release calendar for the remainder of August, ‘Brand New Day’ seems well-positioned to continue its ascent without facing the kind of direct challengers that could hinder its momentum.
