‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Tom Holland Approaches Elite Box Office Status
Tom Holland is experiencing an extraordinary summer, riding high on the success of a beloved Marvel character and a prestigious film directed by one of the industry’s top talents. Over the past few weeks, he has dominated global ticket sales in a way that few actors can achieve.
The box office numbers are impressive. Both ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’ have become significant phenomena, reshaping Holland’s position among Hollywood’s highest earners.
This remarkable momentum has set Holland on a path to potentially become the third-highest-grossing actor of all time at the worldwide box office, trailing only Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson. It’s a significant leap for an actor who started the year far from the top of that list.
At the beginning of 2026, Holland ranked 14th on the all-time highest-grossing actors list, with a career total of $9.9 billion. He was approximately $1.5 billion behind Dwayne Johnson, who held the 11th position at that time.
Then came the powerful combination of ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Christopher Nolan’s adaptation became Holland’s highest-grossing film ever, not adjusted for inflation, earning over $1.1 billion and surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Meanwhile, ‘Brand New Day’ has been breaking records at an unprecedented pace, reaching $1 billion globally in just six days, faster than all films in history except ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Together, these two films have pushed Holland’s earnings for 2026 to around $1.8 billion. This surge has allowed him to surpass notable names like Samuel L. Jackson, whose career total is approximately $14.6 billion, and Robert Downey Jr., who stands at about $14.3 billion, positioning Holland to soon take sole possession of third place.
The top two spots on the all-time list present a different challenge. Saldaña currently leads with career earnings around $16.86 billion, thanks to her roles in the ‘Avatar,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and ‘Star Trek’ franchises. Johansson follows closely with approximately $16.44 billion, largely due to her nearly decade-long portrayal of Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has highlighted Holland’s enduring appeal as key to the studio’s success with the character. “When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula,” Feige said following ‘Brand New Day’s’ record-breaking opening week.

Much of Holland’s ascent can be attributed to the enduring popularity of Spider-Man at the box office. His four solo films as the character have collectively earned around $5.6 billion, more than double the earnings of any actor from the original trilogy during their solo Marvel runs. ‘Brand New Day’ is still showing in theaters and is widely anticipated to surpass $2 billion worldwide, a milestone only seven other films in history have reached.
With ‘Brand New Day’ continuing to climb and no significant competition on the release calendar for the rest of August, Holland’s total is far from final. Whether he can eventually close the multi-billion-dollar gap between him and Saldaña and Johansson remains uncertain, but for now, third place appears to be his for the taking.
