‘Stranger Things’ Creators Express Desire to Remake Controversial Episode
The creators of ‘Stranger Things’, Matt and Ross Duffer, have once again addressed one of the show’s most controversial episodes, expressing their wish to remake it. They also firmly refuted longstanding rumors surrounding the episode.
These remarks were made during an interview on Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz, where the Duffer Brothers reflected on their journey through all five seasons of the acclaimed Netflix series. A significant topic of discussion was Season 2, Episode 7, titled “The Lost Sister,” which remains one of the most debated episodes in the series.
Matt Duffer acknowledged that they would approach the episode differently if given the chance. He stated, “I think the mistake was this idea of a bottle episode. I think if we had threaded it in more organically throughout the season, it would have worked. It wasn’t anybody’s fault except ours. I just would have approached how we integrated Kali differently.”
In this episode, Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, is taken away from Hawkins and travels to Chicago, where she encounters a group of outcasts led by Kali, another girl with powers connected to Eleven’s past. The narrative focuses on Eleven’s exploration of anger and revenge, diverging from the main storyline in Hawkins that had captivated fans.
This shift is a primary reason why the episode sparked controversy. Many viewers felt it disrupted the momentum of Season 2, especially since it aired just before the final episodes. Instead of advancing the main conflict in Hawkins, the episode introduced a different setting and tone, leaving a portion of the audience feeling disconnected.
Ross Duffer elaborated on the production challenges that contributed to the episode’s reception. He remarked, “Matt and I got so drawn into getting those last two episodes of Season 2 written, and prepping because we were directing them, that it just got lost in the shuffle.”

Over time, “The Lost Sister” has become one of the least favored episodes in the series. Some fans speculated that it was intended as a backdoor pilot for a spin-off focused on Kali and her group, a notion the Duffer Brothers have categorically denied.
Matt Duffer addressed this rumor directly, stating, “First of all, let me just clear up some bulls**** out on the internet. There’s so much bulls****t, we’d be here all day, but that was never designed as like a spinoff. That’s bulls**t. That’s not true. That’s gross. We would not do that.”
Despite the backlash, the creators do not view the concept itself as flawed. They believe that the execution and placement of the episode within the season’s structure were the main issues that led to the criticism.
The ongoing debate surrounding “The Lost Sister” highlights a significant tonal shift in the series. While most episodes of ‘Stranger Things’ focus on group dynamics in Hawkins, this particular episode isolates Eleven and delves into a darker, more experimental aspect of her character. For some viewers, this made it intriguing, while for many others, it disrupted the narrative they were most invested in.
Even after the series wrapped up with its Season 5 finale, the episode remains a topic of discussion among fans when reflecting on the show’s highs and lows.
