Sydney Sweeney Takes Lead Role in New ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Movie from Original Author
Sydney Sweeney is stepping into a lead role in a new adaptation of a classic American tale, as a film version of the forthcoming novel ‘Hollow’ is in development with her as both star and producer. This news was reported by Deadline, which shared details regarding the book deal and film package.
The project is helmed by filmmaker and writer Lindsey Anderson Beer, who has sold her debut novel ‘Hollow’ to Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House. As per Deadline’s report, Beer is also set to direct and adapt the book into a feature film.
The film adaptation is progressing swiftly, with production companies LuckyChap, Beer’s Lab Brew banner, and Sweeney’s Honey Trap banner all collaborating on the project. This marks one of the first significant film endeavors for Honey Trap, following Sweeney’s expansion into producing, as previously reported by Deadline.
Sweeney is anticipated to portray the lead character, Katrina Van Tassel. This story reimagines ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’, one of the most iconic pieces of early American literature.
The original ‘Sleepy Hollow’ tale, penned by Washington Irving and first published in 1820, is deeply embedded in American folklore and has served as a cultural reference point for over a century. The narrative is renowned for its blend of mystery, fear, and superstition, centering around the infamous Headless Horseman.
Over the years, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ has become synonymous with early American gothic storytelling, often associated with themes of isolation, the fear of the unknown, and the struggle between reason and superstition.
Given its significant place in American culture, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ has seen numerous adaptations across film, television, and even animation. Each rendition has sought to reinterpret the eerie ambiance of the original story while introducing fresh elements for contemporary audiences. This new adaptation aims to achieve a similar goal, focusing on a more character-driven and modern narrative.

In this new interpretation, Katrina Van Tassel is redefined from a mere romantic figure to the focal point of the narrative. According to Deadline, the novel reimagines her as a pivotal character entangled in a perilous mystery, infused with elements of romance and supernatural tension, all presented in a darker, more contemporary storytelling style.
The project intertwines gothic themes with psychological tension and a heightened emotional focus. It transforms the classic ‘Sleepy Hollow’ world into a narrative described as a blend of mystery and thriller elements, while still honoring its historical roots.
Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to both write and direct the film adaptation. Her dual involvement in the novel and screenplay ensures a cohesive creative vision from page to screen. The production is also backed by LuckyChap, a firm known for supporting strong character-driven films, alongside Sweeney’s Honey Trap banner.
According to Deadline, the novel was swiftly acquired by Putnam after generating significant interest in the publishing sector. The manuscript reportedly caught the attention of multiple studios and publishers before the rights were secured in a preemptive deal.
The book is slated for release in Fall 2027, with the film adaptation expected to progress alongside its publication timeline. Sources cited by Deadline also indicate that the package will soon be officially presented to the market.
With its combination of a beloved literary classic, a modern creative team, and a rising star in the lead role, this project is already garnering attention as it moves forward.
