Tenoch Huerta Ditches Speedo for Namor’s New Look in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Discussions about superhero costumes have evolved into a unique subgenre of pop culture commentary, with fans analyzing every detail long before a movie premieres. Few Marvel characters have sparked as much debate about their attire as Namor, whose revealing debut in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ became one of the film’s most discussed design choices.
Tenoch Huerta first portrayed the underwater king in 2022, earning a rare “introducing” credit for a role that embraced the character’s comic-accurate, minimalistic costume. That outfit, featuring green trunks and limited upper-body coverage, became as much a topic of conversation as Namor’s storyline in the film.
Now, as Huerta reprises the role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ he has confirmed that Namor’s look has undergone a significant upgrade, one he is clearly pleased about. Discussing the character’s new costume, Huerta noted that the wardrobe team has opted for a much more intricate design this time, replacing the revealing outfit with detailed, armor-inspired Mesoamerican regalia.
“It was so cool to not be in the speedos,” Huerta stated, according to IMDb. “Thank you Russo Brothers.”
The new design, showcased in recently released images, replaces the character’s original minimal costume with layered gold and turquoise jewelry, an elaborate feathered headpiece, and a jade earring, along with a decorated spear, giving Namor a distinctly regal and ceremonial look that reflects his status as Talokan’s ruler.
Huerta’s return marks his first appearance as Namor since his 2022 debut, and he has described the experience of stepping back into the character as notably different this time, especially given the large ensemble cast of ‘Doomsday.’ He has previously mentioned that with over twenty significant characters in the film, his own screen time is comparatively smaller and simpler than his central antagonist role in ‘Wakanda Forever.’
Despite the reduced screen time, Huerta has hinted that Namor’s presence still holds significance within the film’s broader narrative, suggesting that there are consequences linked to Doctor Doom’s actions, even if the two characters do not share direct scenes. He has also hinted at potential interactions with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, praising his ‘Doomsday’ co-star while keeping specific plot details under wraps.
The costume transformation aligns with a broader trend in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ marketing, which has revealed updated, comic-accurate designs for several returning and newly introduced characters in anticipation of the film’s massive crossover event. For Huerta, the wardrobe change seems to be a welcome one, allowing him to emphasize the character’s regal authority rather than the online discussions that accompanied his original costume.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, uniting heroes and villains from across the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men for what promises to be one of Marvel’s largest ensemble films to date.
