The finale of ‘The Boys’ has ignited a strong response online after recording a notably lower audience rating compared to earlier episodes in the series.

This information is derived from IMDb user ratings and fan discussions tracking audience scores following the episode’s release. The episode is currently rated 5.8, marking it as the lowest-rated episode throughout the show’s history.

This outcome is particularly striking given that the series previously enjoyed consistently high ratings for its finales. Season 1 concluded with “You Found Me,” which achieved a score of 9.1. The finale of Season 2, “What I Know,” reached an impressive 9.4, one of the highest ratings in the entire series. Season 3 wrapped up with “The Instant White-Hot Wild,” rated 8.3, while Season 4’s finale, “Department of Dirty Tricks,” returned to a strong 9.1. In contrast, the latest finale represents a significant decline.

Much of the audience feedback has centered on the story’s conclusion rather than the acting or production quality. Many viewers expressed dissatisfaction with how key character arcs were resolved, particularly in the final episode. The show has always been celebrated for its bold storytelling and unexpected twists, which heightened expectations for the conclusion.

One of the most discussed aspects is the resolution of Homelander’s storyline. After being developed over multiple seasons as a formidable and perilous figure, he is ultimately stripped of his powers and killed by Billy Butcher. Some viewers felt this diminished the significance of their final confrontation, as it eliminated the anticipated superpowered battle between the two characters.

Billy Butcher’s final arc also polarized fans. After eliminating Homelander, he attempts to unleash a virus intended to eradicate all Supes. This prompts Hughie to intervene by shooting him. Some viewers believed this moment occurred too abruptly, failing to allow sufficient time for the emotional weight of the decision to fully resonate on screen.

Pacing was another frequent criticism. Despite the finale running for over an hour, many fans felt it attempted to resolve too many storylines simultaneously. Character arcs like Starlight’s resistance efforts and Ryan’s future were perceived as rushed or insufficiently explored.

The tone of the ending also became a focal point. Rather than offering a more hopeful or clear resolution, the finale heavily leans into a darker outcome where both sides endure losses. While this aligns with the show’s typical style, some viewers felt it went too far and undermined the themes of teamwork and resistance that were more prominent in earlier seasons.

Despite the criticism, the finale still provides closure to a long-running narrative that has been developing since the series’ inception. It ties up the main character journeys and significant conflicts, even if opinions are divided on how satisfying those conclusions feel.
