Ridley Scott has established one of the most remarkable careers in Hollywood, delivering iconic films like ‘Alien,’ ‘Blade Runner,’ and ‘Gladiator’ over five decades. However, even the most celebrated directors can experience downturns, and Scott has quietly accumulated a series of box office disappointments in recent years that have gone largely unnoticed amid his larger successes.

His latest film, ‘The Dog Stars,’ a post-apocalyptic thriller adapted from Peter Heller’s acclaimed novel, debuted with a strong cast and a significant production budget. Unfortunately, the film’s opening weekend figures indicated serious trouble for 20th Century Studios.

The situation has worsened significantly. ‘The Dog Stars’ experienced a staggering 77% drop on its second Friday, earning only $700,000, which solidifies its position as one of Ridley Scott’s most significant box office failures.

Starring Jacob Elordi as civilian pilot Hig and Josh Brolin as ex-Marine survivalist Bangley, the film had a disappointing opening, grossing just $8 million domestically against a production budget estimated between $70 million and $110 million. This performance placed it in fifth place at the box office, far below expectations for a film with such star power and directorial acclaim.

The film’s challenges extend beyond its box office results. ‘The Dog Stars’ currently holds a 40% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a mediocre 71% audience rating, and it received a disappointing C+ CinemaScore grade, which is a poor sign for any film’s potential to maintain momentum post-release.

Social media analytics firm RelishMix reported that the film lagged behind similar action-adventure titles by 15% in online engagement, with audiences questioning whether the adaptation captured the novel’s subtle humanity or merely focused on explosions. Critics have also drawn unfavorable comparisons to other post-apocalyptic works like ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘The Road,’ suggesting that the film failed to stand out in a crowded genre.

The demographic breakdown of opening weekend audiences also raised eyebrows, with women under 25, typically a strong segment of Elordi’s fanbase, accounting for only 6% of ticket buyers. In contrast, men over 25 made up 45% of the audience, indicating that the film did not resonate with the younger viewers who might have been expected given its star’s rising profile.

This latest setback adds to a troubling trend for Scott at the box office, marking his sixth consecutive disappointment following ‘All the Money in the World,’ ‘The Last Duel,’ ‘House of Gucci,’ ‘Napoleon,’ and ‘Gladiator II,’ each of which featured significant star power and aspirations for awards recognition.

Despite this streak of failures, major studios have not completely turned away from Scott. He is reportedly moving forward with another project, an adaptation of ‘Treasure Island,’ which Sony has agreed to finance, indicating that the industry still sees his name as a viable investment despite recent box office challenges.

‘The Dog Stars’ also features Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Allison Janney in its ensemble cast, showcasing a talented roster that ultimately failed to draw in audiences. Directed by Scott from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, the film runs for 118 minutes and was produced through Scott Free Productions alongside 20th Century Studios.

With its significant second-weekend decline now confirmed, ‘The Dog Stars’ appears set to finish its theatrical run as one of the more forgettable entries in Scott’s otherwise illustrious filmography. Whether the film will find a second chance on streaming remains uncertain, but its theatrical prospects seem bleak at this point.
