‘X-Men ’97’ Producer Confirms Nightcrawler’s Death Is Permanent
Marvel’s revival of its beloved ’90s animated series has consistently raised the emotional stakes for its mutant ensemble, leading to the deaths of fan-favorite characters that keep longtime viewers on edge. Few losses have resonated as deeply as the one that concluded the show’s second season, particularly given how central the character had become since the very first episode.
That character is Nightcrawler, the swashbuckling, faith-driven mutant known as Kurt Wagner, whose sacrifice at the end of ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 has left fans hoping for a potential return. Given the comic book industry’s history of treating character deaths as non-permanent, that hope isn’t entirely unfounded.
Now, one of the show’s producers has addressed this lingering question directly. In an interview with The Direct at MultiCon, the annual fan convention in Los Angeles, executive producer Eric Lewald confirmed whether Nightcrawler’s death will stick, responding with a firm, “Oh yeah!”
Lewald, who also served as the original showrunner of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series,’ provided fans with one of the clearest answers they’re likely to receive ahead of Season 3’s eventual release. This directness contrasts with earlier comments from supervising producer Jake Castorena, who took a more coy approach when asked the same question, responding with, “Is anyone ever really dead in comics?”
The difference between Lewald’s blunt confirmation and Castorena’s playful ambiguity has left fans with mixed signals regarding Kurt’s ultimate fate. Castorena had previously mentioned that Nightcrawler was originally meant to die back in Season 1 instead of Gambit, adding another layer of behind-the-scenes context to how deliberately the character’s arc has been shaped throughout the show.

Nightcrawler’s death occurred in the Season 2 finale after Rogue made a deal with the Celestial Eson to save Gambit from Apocalypse’s possession, a bargain that would have cost Rogue her own life. Kurt intervened, offering himself in her place, stating that his death would still bring forth life beyond just saving his sister.
This moment proved controversial among fans, many of whom felt the show had just restored Nightcrawler’s wise-cracking, adventurous personality after reworking his portrayal from the original 1990s series. His death also came with significant references to his complicated family history, including his relationship with his mother Mystique, adding emotional weight that made the loss sting even more for longtime viewers.
Production on the next chapters of the story is progressing steadily. According to Castorena, the season finale script for Season 3 has already been sent off for animation, with early episodes receiving completed animation back from the studio, while Season 4 remains in earlier stages of storyboarding and animatics.
Despite Nightcrawler’s absence, the broader X-Men mythology continues to expand elsewhere in Marvel’s slate. Original franchise actor Alan Cumming, who portrayed Nightcrawler in 2003’s ‘X2: X-Men United,’ is set to reprise the role in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ joining fellow Fox-era stars like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in bringing the mutants into the MCU.
With Lewald’s comments now providing the clearest confirmation yet that Kurt Wagner’s story has genuinely reached its end within the animated continuity, attention shifts to how the remaining X-Men will cope with the fallout from his sacrifice heading into Season 3. Given how much the show has focused on grief and loss in its recent run, Nightcrawler’s absence is likely to be profoundly felt across the team’s dynamic moving forward.
Neither Marvel Animation nor Disney+ has announced an official release date for ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 3, but production appears to be moving forward steadily behind the scenes. For now, fans will have to accept that Kurt Wagner’s teleporting, sword-wielding presence won’t be returning to the team anytime soon, at least according to the producer who should know best.
