Christopher Nolan has spent this summer demonstrating that a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient Greek epic can still thrive in multiplexes like a superhero blockbuster. Few directors could have successfully executed such an unconventional gamble, yet ‘The Odyssey’ has consistently defied the typical expectations of blockbuster performance week after week.

This film, Nolan’s expansive interpretation of Homer’s classic poem, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside a talented ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson. Since its debut on July 17, the film has been shot entirely on IMAX film cameras and has steadily climbed the box office charts, reaching heights that most modern releases can only aspire to.

Now, the film has achieved yet another impressive milestone. According to updated estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ has crossed the $1.5 billion threshold globally, earning an additional $48.7 million internationally over the weekend. This brings its estimated international total to $988.8 million and its overall global tally to approximately $1.553 billion.

This achievement places the film in an elite category. ‘The Odyssey’ has already become the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and it now stands as Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, having surpassed 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ shortly after crossing the billion-dollar mark.

The film’s staying power is as remarkable as its scale. It reached $1 billion worldwide faster than anticipated, becoming the third Nolan film to hit that milestone, alongside ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Its unusually small weekend-over-weekend drops have kept it a staple in premium IMAX and large-format screens well beyond its opening month.

Much of this consistency can be attributed to the film’s international rollout, which staggered major markets throughout the summer rather than launching everywhere simultaneously. ‘The Odyssey’ debuted in South Korea in early August before expanding into China and Japan later that month, generating fresh waves of ticket sales even as its domestic run matured.

Domestically, the film has also entered rare territory, becoming just the twenty-fourth movie in history to surpass the half-billion mark in North America. Alongside ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ another 2026 blockbuster nearing historic milestones, Nolan’s epic has contributed to making this summer the strongest the industry has seen since before the pandemic.

With awards season discussions already beginning to emerge and its theatrical run showing no signs of slowing down, ‘The Odyssey’ appears poised to continue its ascent on the all-time global chart in the coming weeks. Few directors today have managed to transform such an ambitious project into a genuine box office success quite like Nolan has this summer.
