Comedy sequels often face a tough road. Even the most beloved workplace sitcoms can struggle to recapture the magic of their initial season, and spinoffs have an even steeper hill to climb as they are constantly compared to their predecessors.

‘The Paper’ encountered this very challenge after its first season, which was a solid but sometimes uneven follow-up to ‘The Office.’ Critics generally praised its mockumentary style but noted it had yet to establish its own identity. This comparison loomed large as the Toledo Truth-Teller newsroom comedy prepared for its second season.

Now, with its premiere on September 9 on Peacock approaching, early reviews for season two are pouring in, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The series currently holds an impressive 89% on the Tomatometer, slightly surpassing its freshman season and indicating that critics believe the show has finally found its rhythm.

Much of the acclaim focuses on how confidently ‘The Paper’ has distinguished itself from its predecessor. Collider’s Tania Hussain remarked that the show has become “faster, funnier, and more confident in the type of sitcom it wants to be” this season. She noted that with its second run, “The Paper feels less like a show living in The Office’s shadow and more like a workplace comedy that can actually stand beside it.”

Hussain also highlighted the ensemble’s chemistry as a key factor in the season’s enhancement, particularly praising Sabrina Impacciatore’s performance as one of the standout elements generating the biggest laughs this year. This sense of a tighter, more assured cast dynamic was echoed across multiple reviews, with several critics noting how much more comfortable the characters appear as they navigate workplace chaos and their evolving relationships.

IGN’s Michael Peyton shared this sentiment, observing that season two often pushes the series beyond the limits of its mockumentary format into something with broader appeal. Screen Rant’s Ben Gibbons went even further, asserting that the season demonstrates “sitcoms are still viable” in today’s television landscape, praising how it allows every character to shine within the reporting format.

However, not all feedback has been entirely positive, though the criticisms have been relatively minor. Some reviewers pointed out that the season occasionally leans into broader humor, sometimes at the cost of subtlety, even as it continues to explore fresh angles on office politics and romance among its ensemble.

Others noted a tonal shift in how the show addresses its subject matter, with one reviewer observing that its perspective on the challenges of modern journalism, already uncomfortable in season one, becomes markedly more unsettling this time around. This darker undertone appears to be a deliberate choice rather than a misstep, adding emotional weight to the series without sacrificing its comedic essence.

Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, who both return as co-creators and executive producers, ‘The Paper’ picks up its narrative following the events of the first season’s finale. All ten episodes of the new season will be available on Peacock, providing fans with a binge-worthy experience right from the start.

As reviews continue to emerge ahead of the premiere, ‘The Paper’ seems set to join the ranks of Daniels’ other workplace comedies as a certified fresh success. Whether it can maintain this momentum with audiences once episodes begin airing remains to be seen, but critics appear convinced that the show has finally found its footing.
