Jeffrey Dean Morgan has spent nearly a decade embodying one of television’s most controversial characters, and even after all this time, the distinction between actor and villain remains unclear for many viewers. The introduction of Negan on ‘The Walking Dead’ is still regarded as one of the most brutal and contentious moments in the franchise, and it appears that the aftermath is far from over.

Morgan first appeared as Negan in 2016, and the character’s early actions, particularly the violent deaths of two beloved characters, left a lasting impression on fans that hasn’t faded over the years. Even now, nearly a decade later, Morgan shares that he still encounters individuals who struggle to separate him from the character he portrays.

In a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Morgan discussed the extent of the lingering animosity. When Horowitz expressed hope that fans recognized the difference between Morgan and Negan, the actor quickly corrected him, revealing that he still receives hate from fans upset over Negan’s actions.

Morgan expressed surprise at the ongoing backlash, especially considering how long ago the storyline aired, pointing out that Glenn’s death had already occurred in the source comics years before. He described the intensity of fan anger as genuinely shocking, recalling on the podcast how deeply invested audiences had become in Glenn’s character before his death was depicted on screen.

This lingering resentment reached a peak during an encounter Morgan described in Georgia. He and co-star Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, often rode motorcycles together and stopped at local spots, but one particular coffee shop visit turned confrontational unexpectedly.

Morgan recounted that an elderly woman, estimated to be around 80 years old, approached him and Reedus with her granddaughter. While the granddaughter was excited to meet both actors, the grandmother reacted differently upon recognizing Morgan, physically striking him with her purse and shouting expletives.

The situation escalated quickly enough that Reedus reportedly urged Morgan to leave immediately, sensing the encounter had turned serious rather than just an awkward fan interaction. Morgan described the incident as intense, standing out even among years of similar experiences with unhappy fans.

Despite Negan’s redemption arc in later seasons, where he ultimately saves Judith Grimes, kills the Whisperer leader Alpha, and aids in protecting the surviving communities, Morgan notes that the hostility hasn’t completely vanished. He mentioned that even while walking down the street in New York, someone occasionally yells at him or reacts negatively solely because of Negan’s early actions on the show.

This kind of prolonged fan reaction highlights how effectively Morgan’s performance resonated with audiences from the very beginning, even if the response wasn’t always favorable at the time. Negan’s evolution from villain to reluctant antihero in subsequent seasons has clearly done little to erase the initial impact of those early, brutal episodes.

With Morgan continuing to portray the character in the spinoff series ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ it seems that audiences still haven’t fully reconciled with what Negan did all those years ago. Regardless of how the character’s arc unfolds moving forward, Morgan’s real-life encounters indicate that Negan’s legacy remains as complex for fans as it is for the character himself.
