Tom Holland Discusses Spider-Man’s Symbiote Suit in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
Tom Holland has portrayed Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for nearly a decade, but his recent press tour suggests he’s uncertain about what lies ahead for the character. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ still performing strongly at the box office, focus has shifted to how the web-slinger might play a role in Marvel’s upcoming crossover event.
This speculation has intensified following the film’s post-credits scene, which hinted at Spider-Man being transported off-world just as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ approach. With Marvel confirming both films as the pinnacle of its current Multiverse Saga, fans have been theorizing for months about the potential role Holland’s Spider-Man might have as the story unfolds on Battleworld.
One enduring fan theory suggests that Spider-Man might finally wear the iconic black symbiote suit, a costume linked to some of the character’s most intense comic book storylines. When asked about this possibility on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Holland’s response was noncommittal; he threw up his hands and avoided eye contact with host Josh Horowitz.
Holland claimed he has no idea what ‘Secret Wars’ entails, mentioning that Marvel has intentionally kept him uninformed, as his lack of knowledge serves as a promotional advantage during press events, according to Popverse. He even joked that a recent vacation with director Joe Russo yielded no insights about the project, emphasizing his genuine ignorance about what’s ahead.
This kind of secrecy isn’t new for Marvel, especially regarding Holland, who has a history of accidentally revealing plot details during promotional cycles. Given this background, keeping him completely out of the loop on ‘Secret Wars’ may be more about preventing leaks than mistrust.
Despite Holland’s claims of being uninformed, rumors about his involvement in the crossover continue to circulate. Reports indicate he could have a significant role in the film, though neither Holland nor directors Anthony and Joe Russo have confirmed what that role might be.
While Holland’s specific role remains unverified, Marvel has assembled an extensive cast for ‘Secret Wars,’ featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and Benedict Cumberbatch returning as Doctor Strange. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as part of the Fantastic Four, along with an ensemble featuring Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink, who is expected to appear following her recent addition to the Spider-Man franchise.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to release this December and ‘Secret Wars’ following next year, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see if Holland’s Spider-Man will don the symbiote suit or continue his adventures in the classic red and blue.
