Tom Holland Shines on GQ’s ‘The Odyssey’ Cover with Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic ‘The Odyssey’ is poised to be one of the most ambitious films of his career, and a new feature from GQ has unveiled the challenges faced during production.
The magazine recently published a major cover story centered on the film, showcasing a special photoshoot with stars Tom Holland, Matt Damon, and Robert Pattinson. Alongside the captivating images, the cast and Nolan shared insights from the demanding shoot, which spanned multiple countries and some of the most challenging filming locations imaginable.
Filming for ‘The Odyssey’ took place across six countries within a 91-day production schedule. The movie journeyed through Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. The scale of the project was so immense that even seasoned actors were taken aback by what Nolan was attempting.
Matt Damon, who portrays Odysseus in the film, admitted he had never encountered anything quite like it.
“Every single location on this movie would’ve been the hardest location on any other movie I’ve ever done,” Damon told GQ. “And they just went back-to-back.”
One of the most demanding locations was a remote castle in Sicily, which represents Ithaca, Odysseus’ home. The castle is perched nearly 900 feet above the ground, necessitating that cast and crew hike up a steep path daily. In some instances, helicopters were required to transport equipment.
Robert Pattinson, who plays Antinous, recalled arriving midway through production and immediately noticing the exhaustion on everyone’s faces.
“I’ve never seen people look so exhausted,” Pattinson remarked. “At the end of every day people were broken.”
Tom Holland, who plays Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, shared his thoughts on stepping onto the grand production. He expressed his amazement at the sheer scale of what Nolan had created.
“I remember walking down this beach for half an hour,” Holland recounted. “I’m just seeing Greek soldier, Greek soldier, Greek boat, Greek soldier. I haven’t seen any evidence of a film set.”
The actor noted that it felt less like a movie production and more like a historical reenactment happening right before his eyes.
The feature also highlighted Nolan’s reputation for precision and efficiency. Holland revealed that accepting the role nearly led to a scheduling conflict with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Due to overlapping filming dates, he had to negotiate directly with Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman to adjust the Spider-Man schedule.
Fortunately, everything aligned perfectly.
“Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation,” Holland explained.
The trust in Nolan proved worthwhile. Reports indicate that ‘The Odyssey’ began filming right on schedule and wrapped up nine days ahead of time.
Nolan also reflected on recurring themes in his work. While many of his films delve into the concept of time, he believes family has become an equally significant focus in his storytelling.
“The tension is in so many of my films between family and wanting to be with family and having responsibilities outside of that,” Nolan stated.
With a reported budget of around $250 million, a massive international shoot, and an all-star cast led by Damon, Holland, and Pattinson, ‘The Odyssey’ is already being hailed as Nolan’s most ambitious project to date. The new GQ photoshoot and behind-the-scenes stories provide fans with an early look at the scale and commitment that went into bringing this legendary tale to life.
