Marvel’s Disney+ lineup has been gradually delving into the emotional fallout of ‘WandaVision,’ and the studio’s next chapter is now coming into clearer view. ‘VisionQuest‘ has been described as one of Marvel Television’s most personal projects, focusing entirely on Paul Bettany’s synthezoid and the complex legacy he carries into the series.

This eight-episode series continues the storyline Marvel left open after ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along,’ following White Vision as he seeks to reconnect with memories that have only recently been restored. Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for his work on ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ’12 Monkeys,’ is at the helm, shaping both the narrative and a significant portion of the show’s direction.

Matalas has now revealed how the series intends to revisit one of the MCU’s most heartbreaking moments. In an interview with SFX Magazine for the outlet’s latest issue featuring the show on its cover, Matalas confirmed that ‘VisionQuest’ will approach Tony Stark’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ entirely from the perspective of artificial intelligence.

He explained that revisiting this moment raised several intriguing questions once the show’s various AI characters were brought together in the same narrative space. Matalas specifically mentioned F.R.I.D.A.Y., telling SFX Magazine that she was present when Tony Stark died, prompting the question of what that experience is like for an AI who was unable to protect the person she was designed to safeguard.

This line of inquiry extends further into the show’s exploration of artificial consciousness. Matalas indicated that the series will tackle whether characters like F.R.I.D.A.Y. are corporeal or purely digital, whether they exist as avatars, and whether some genuinely desire a physical form while others do not. He added that the show’s pilot will quickly address these questions once it premieres.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. became Tony Stark’s primary AI assistant following ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ after J.A.R.V.I.S., the system from which Vision was originally created, merged into Vision’s consciousness. In his final moments as a standalone entity, J.A.R.V.I.S. monitored Tony’s failing vital signs and delivered the news of his death to the assembled Avengers, a connection that adds even deeper narrative resonance to ‘VisionQuest’s’ AI-focused approach.

Matalas has also been open about how he views the show’s role within the broader ‘WandaVision’ trilogy. In a separate part of the same SFX Magazine interview, he clarified that he wasn’t specifically directed to create a story that completes the trilogy alongside ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along.’ Instead, he described ‘VisionQuest’ as functioning more like a direct sequel to ‘WandaVision’ while still being able to stand on its own.

This perspective aligns with how Bettany has publicly discussed the project, describing ‘VisionQuest’ as an exciting springboard rather than a definitive conclusion to Vision’s ongoing story. Given that the character has technically died twice throughout the franchise, the show seems poised to leave room for further narratives in the future rather than closing the book entirely.

‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, marking the 18th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its uniquely intimate focus on artificial intelligence and grief, the series appears ready to deliver one of the more emotionally distinctive entries in Marvel’s expanding streaming catalog.
