Where Was Netflix’s ‘My Brilliant Career’ Filmed? Discover Its Beautiful South Australian Locations
This month, Australian literature has found a new home on Netflix as the streamer adapts Miles Franklin’s beloved 1901 novel into a full series for the first time. Best known for the BAFTA-winning 1979 film featuring Judy Davis and Sam Neill, the story follows a determined farm girl pursuing her literary dreams. This new adaptation stars ‘The Newsreader’ actress Philippa Northeast as Sybylla Melvyn, alongside a talented cast that includes Christopher Chung, Anna Chancellor, and Genevieve O’Reilly.
The reimagining brings a modern twist while remaining true to its turn-of-the-century roots. Northeast has shared insights on why Sybylla’s character continues to resonate today, highlighting in a Netflix interview that despite progress over the years, women’s rights still face challenges globally, making Sybylla’s quest for independence more relevant than ever.
To authentically depict this historical setting, the production shifted entirely to South Australia, moving away from New South Wales, where the original film was primarily filmed. The small town of Penola, with a population of just over 1,300, served as the main base for filming, complemented by additional shoots at Adelaide Studios and the picturesque surrounding countryside.
Penola played a crucial role, particularly around Yallum Park, a Victorian-era homestead constructed between 1878 and 1880 for pastoralist and politician John Riddoch. Recognized as one of Australia’s best-preserved historic homes, its grand architecture and expansive grounds provided an authentic backdrop for many pivotal scenes in the series.
In addition to Penola, the production extensively utilized the Southern Barossa region, celebrated for its vineyards, farmland, and established rural communities. This stunning landscape delivered the sweeping countryside visuals essential to the story’s early 1900s Australian setting, while another rural property, Pine Hill, further enriched the show’s agricultural ambiance.
A standout location was Para Para Mansion in Gawler, a heritage property built between 1851 and 1862, now a popular tourist attraction known for its beautiful lavender gardens. The mansion provided a lush visual backdrop for several of Sybylla’s more extravagant society encounters, creating a scene reminiscent of ‘Bridgerton’ with tea parties and cocktail gatherings held on its manicured lawns, open to the public on select days throughout the year.

Beyond serving as a filming location, the production significantly impacted South Australia’s economy. According to the South Australian Film Corporation, ‘My Brilliant Career‘ became the largest television season ever produced in the state, injecting an estimated $19 million into the local economy while employing 600 South Australians and engaging 410 local businesses across various sectors.
South Australian Arts Minister Andrea Michaels has expressed optimism that the series will enhance tourism in the state, given the prominence of its heritage locations throughout the show. Filming occurred last year during the Australian winter, ultimately making it the most expensive television production ever filmed in South Australia. With production completed and all six episodes now available for streaming, fans interested in exploring the real-life locations behind Sybylla’s story have a wealth of historic South Australian landmarks to discover.
