‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ Star Mahershala Ali Discusses Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Delays
For years, Marvel enthusiasts have witnessed one of the studio’s most awaited projects languish in uncertainty, with directors cycling in and out and release dates disappearing from the schedule. Few actors have had their careers so closely tied to an unproduced film as Mahershala Ali, whose much-anticipated role as Blade was first revealed back in 2019. What began as one of the MCU’s most thrilling reboots has gradually morphed into one of its most infamous cautionary tales.
The two-time Oscar winner has mostly maintained a diplomatic stance regarding the situation over the years, even as directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange departed from the project and the 2023 WGA strike introduced further delays. However, in a recent conversation, Ali provided fans with a clearer understanding of the personal and professional costs incurred due to the prolonged delay.
During an appearance on GQ’s “One More Question” podcast, Ali disclosed that Marvel effectively dictated his entire schedule while ‘Blade’ remained in development, compelling him to decline other opportunities as he awaited the start of production. He candidly shared the toll it took, revealing that his intense training for the role led to a knee injury, and he even relocated his family to Atlanta in preparation for a shoot that kept getting postponed indefinitely.
Ali did not shy away from detailing the disruptive nature of the years filled with uncertainty. He explained that turning down other projects was unavoidable since Marvel essentially controlled his schedule during that period, a commitment that ultimately resulted in a noticeable gap in his filmography. According to the interview, Ali managed to complete only five films in the eight years following ‘Green Book,’ a figure he acknowledged should have realistically been six or seven had ‘Blade’ actually entered production.
The physical preparation alone underscores Ali’s serious commitment to the role. He engaged in extensive training in swordsmanship and various martial arts disciplines to prepare for the vampire hunter, injuring his knee in the process—all for a film that never made it to a soundstage. This level of dedication makes the project’s eventual removal from Marvel’s release schedule even more painful for long-time fans eager to witness his transformation on screen.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also taken responsibility for the project’s downfall. Speaking earlier this year on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige admitted he felt like “a gigantic loser and failure” regarding the studio’s inability to launch ‘Blade’ with Ali attached, explaining that the team never felt confident they could turn a good script into a great film without compromising either Ali or the project itself.
Ali has publicly concurred with that harsh self-assessment. When asked directly why the film never materialized, he stated it was ultimately a question only Feige could answer, but he did not contest Feige’s claim of it being the biggest failure of his career, telling GQ he completely agreed and that Feige should feel that way given the significant investment in the project.
Despite the lingering frustration, Ali insists he has genuinely moved on from the experience. He has since reunited with former ‘Blade’ director Bassam Tariq on an unrelated film titled ‘Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother,’ which recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. He described finally achieving closure on the ‘Blade’ chapter as liberating rather than disheartening. In his own words, the failure turned out to be a blessing in disguise, motivating him to stop waiting for a golden opportunity and start forging his own path forward.
With ‘Blade’ now completely removed from Marvel’s release calendar and Ali focusing on new projects outside the MCU, it seems increasingly unlikely that fans will ever see this particular version of the character on the big screen.
