This weekend marks a historic moment at the multiplex, largely driven by filmmakers from YouTube rather than traditional Hollywood. Three films from YouTube-originated directors are currently occupying spots in the domestic top five, a remarkable achievement that would have seemed improbable just two years ago.

‘Backrooms’, ‘Obsession‘, and ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Final Act’ are not only performing well; they are transforming the narrative around who gets to create films and who shows up to watch them.

‘Backrooms’, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, achieved a staggering 81.4 million dollars in North America and 118 million dollars globally during its opening weekend, setting a record for the largest opening by a first-time director with an original film.

Parsons has now become the youngest director in A24’s history, having cultivated his audience on YouTube before stepping onto a professional film set.

Curry Barker, the 26-year-old filmmaker behind ‘Obsession’, followed a similar grassroots approach, initially releasing his micro-budget found-footage film ‘Milk and Serial’ for free on YouTube in 2024. Focus Features later acquired ‘Obsession’ for approximately 15 million dollars at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film has achieved something almost unprecedented in the industry, increasing its ticket sales by 10% in its second weekend after a 39% jump in its first. This marks the first time since ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ in 1982 that a film has seen sales rise in its second and third weekends outside of the holiday season, according to Focus.

Completing this remarkable trio is ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Final Act’, which earned 7.8 million dollars on Thursday alone across over 2,200 Fathom locations, outperforming both ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’ during the preview period. By the end of 2024, YouTube videos related to the animated series had amassed a staggering 25 billion views, making it one of the five most-watched Netflix titles globally within its first two weeks of release.

As reported by Variety, James Wan, who co-produced ‘Backrooms’ through his company Atomic Monster, has commented on the deep connection these filmmakers have with their audiences. He noted that Parsons’ genuine approach means he is “strictly thinking about the authenticity of the film he’s making and what his fans are expecting,” which is why those fans have turned out in such large numbers.

Notably, both ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’ have outperformed Disney’s latest Star Wars installment ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ at the box office, indicating a shift in audience preference towards original narratives over familiar franchise content.

The data is sending a clear message to studios that they can no longer ignore. Gen Z has a select group of creators they trust, and those creators are not necessarily the ones with the largest studio budgets or the longest IMDb credits. They are the ones who built something authentic online first.
