The second season of Apple TV+’s ‘Sugar’ concluded with one of the most significant twists the series has presented thus far. The finale offered John Sugar the reunion he had longed for, but it quickly transformed into an unexpected scenario. Instead of the sister he remembered, Sugar found that Djen had undergone changes he never anticipated.

As reported by TV Insider, the season finale unveiled that Djen had survived her disappearance years ago. While Sugar thought she was dead, the reality was far more intricate. During her absence, Djen disregarded the rules of their alien race, secretly creating technology capable of controlling Earth’s weather and aligning with a powerful group of humans. Meanwhile, many of their race opted to leave Earth for their home planet, while Sugar remained behind in search of his sister.

In an interview with TV Insider, Colin Farrell elaborated on the emotional weight of this revelation for Sugar. “Finding out that his sister, not only is she still alive, which is beautiful, and there’s a sense of release, a relief with that, but then finding out that she’s not who he remembers her to be and there’s been some change that he can’t quantify or fully understand, it’s a lot.”

The reunion occurs during an exclusive event filled with affluent and influential guests, arranged secretly by Charlotte, played by Laura Donnelly. However, Sugar soon realizes that Charlotte has been collaborating with Djen all along. After Sugar declines to support Djen’s plans, Charlotte knocks him out by blowing cinnamon into his face, a substance that serves as a weakness for their alien species.

Donnelly shared her experience filming this emotional scene during her interview with TV Insider. “I think it might’ve been powdered chocolate, but I had to do it a few times. It was at the very end of a very, very long night shoot.” She also discussed Charlotte’s feelings about betraying Sugar. “It’s really devastating for Charlotte because she is aware of just what level of betrayal this is, and yet she doesn’t mean it that way. This relationship was real for her.”

Before Sugar loses consciousness, Djen softly tells him, “It’s not for them, it’s for us.” Actress Mireille Enos reflected on the significance of that line. “I think she’s imagining this space, this planet, as kind of a wonderful second home for her race. Potentially. She loves her little brother, but I think her own ambition is number one on her priorities.”

When Sugar regains consciousness, he finds himself alone once more. However, Farrell believes the narrative is far from concluded. In his interview with TV Insider, he suggested that Sugar would not simply walk away after uncovering the truth about Djen.

“I don’t know how long he can sit on knowing that she’s here on planet Earth and not try to sit down with her again and find out exactly what she’s doing and why she’s doing it. He has very daunting suspicions as to what her intention may be now that she can wield this powerful technology.”

The finale wraps up with Sugar returning to his everyday life alongside his dog, Wiley, as he prepares to move forward. Nevertheless, the closing moments hint at another mystery brewing when his alien communication device unexpectedly receives an incoming signal after he has exited the room.

This final hint leaves the possibility open for another season. Although Apple TV+ has yet to officially confirm Season 3, the ending suggests that there is still much more of Sugar’s journey to explore, especially now that Djen’s true intentions have been unveiled.
