‘The Remarried Empress’ Trailer, Release Date, Cast, Plot, and Where to Watch Disney+’s K-Drama
Webtoon adaptations have emerged as a significant source of content for Korean television, and few titles boast the extensive fanbase that ‘The Remarried Empress’ possesses. This fantasy-romance webtoon has garnered nearly 3 billion views globally, making it one of the most popular in its genre and a prime candidate for a lavish live-action adaptation.
Disney has been teasing this adaptation for several months, and the streaming service has confirmed that it is positioning the show as one of its largest Korean productions to date. During its Asia-Pacific content showcase last year, Disney labeled ‘The Remarried Empress’ as the most expensive Korean drama it has ever created, with filming taking place in various European locations alongside intricately designed palace sets to match its ambitious vision.
That investment is finally paying off with a confirmed release date. ‘The Remarried Empress’ is set to premiere on November 4 on Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the United States. The 10-episode series will debut with four episodes at launch, followed by two new episodes every Wednesday until its finale on November 25.
The narrative centers on Empress Navier, the seemingly flawless empress of the Eastern Empire, whose marriage to Emperor Sovieshu begins to deteriorate after he falls for a runaway slave named Rashta and requests a divorce. Instead of resisting the split, Navier agrees to one condition: she seeks permission to remarry Crown Prince Heinrey of the rival Western Kingdom, a choice that ignites a complex power struggle that threatens to destabilize both realms as she strives to reclaim her position.
Leading the cast is Shin Mina, recognized for ‘Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’ and ‘Karma,’ who portrays Empress Navier. She is joined by Ju Jihoon, known for ‘Light Shop’ and ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,’ as Emperor Sovieshu, while Lee Jongsuk from ‘Big Mouth’ plays Crown Prince Heinrey. Lee Seyoung, famed for ‘The Red Sleeve’ and ‘The Crowned Clown,’ completes the main quartet as Rashta, the escaped slave at the heart of the emperor’s pursuit.
Behind the scenes, Cho Suwon, known for ‘Still 17’ and ‘Pinocchio,’ directs the series, with the screenplay adapted by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choongyeol. The first teaser trailer has already been released, showcasing the vast Eastern Empire and introducing Navier as Sovieshu vows, “No matter what, you are my one and only wife,” setting the stage for the betrayal that initiates the entire plot.
Character posters released alongside the trailer highlight each member of the central love quadrangle, featuring dialogue directly from their story arcs, including Sovieshu’s declaration of his need to divorce the empress and Heinrey’s formal introduction to Navier as his queen. This clearly indicates that Disney is emphasizing the show’s dramatic, high-stakes romance as its main attraction for new viewers unfamiliar with the source material.
Before its full streaming rollout, ‘The Remarried Empress’ will receive a grand send-off at the Busan International Film Festival in October, where three of its ten episodes, totaling 151 minutes, will have their world premiere as part of the festival’s On Screen selection. This sidebar has previously showcased high-profile series ahead of their release, placing ‘The Remarried Empress’ in esteemed company as it approaches its wide launch.
With a built-in fanbase from the source webtoon and being one of Disney’s most expensive Korean productions to date, ‘The Remarried Empress’ is poised to be one of the platform’s standout releases this fall.
