McDonald’s has been transforming its Happy Meal offerings into a platform for some of pop culture’s most unexpected collaborations. From BTS-themed toys to a Japanese-inspired dipping sauce partnership with ‘Jujutsu Kaisen,’ the fast-food chain has increasingly embraced East Asian entertainment to attract both children and collectors alike.

Now, this trend has led to one of its most surprising mashups yet. The Hello Kitty and the Sanrio universe are joining forces with Japan’s iconic monster franchise, merging two distinct realms of pop culture into a collectible lineup that’s both cute and monstrous.

The Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal is currently available at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide for a limited time. Earlier this month, McDonald’s teased the collaboration with a brief Instagram clip featuring Hello Kitty peering at a Happy Meal underwater while dressed in a monster suit, complete with a fierce head and tail.

This meal features eight exclusive collectible toys that reimagine beloved Sanrio characters as playful kaiju hybrids. A highlight from the collection is “Pompom Gigan,” which creatively combines the Sanrio character Pompompurin with the design elements of Godzilla’s legendary rival, Gigan. According to McDonald’s, this promotion is the ultimate crossover where “kawaii meets kaiju,” showcasing that even the fiercest monsters can have a soft side.

This isn’t McDonald’s first venture into blending Sanrio characters with other franchises. The chain has previously paired Hello Kitty with properties like Yu-Gi-Oh and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, establishing a history of crossover Happy Meals that appeal to collectors beyond the typical kids’ meal audience. Earlier this summer, McDonald’s also launched a BT21 Happy Meal in collaboration with BTS, continuing a partnership that began with TinyTAN toys inspired by the group’s seven members back in 2025.

The Godzilla aspect of this partnership aligns with a broader trend for the franchise, which has increasingly ventured into lifestyle and pop culture collaborations beyond the cinema. By pairing the monster franchise with one of the most recognizable character brands globally, both properties can tap into different segments of the same fanbase.

For collectors hoping these toys will retain their value, keeping them sealed in their original packaging is usually the best strategy, a tip that applies here as it does with any limited-run collectible. Given how quickly some of McDonald’s past crossover promotions have sold out or become highly sought after on the secondary market, this advice is particularly relevant for those who manage to snag this lineup.

Whether kids today fully understand who Godzilla is remains uncertain, but that won’t deter adult collectors from making a purchase. With the novelty of the crossover and the appeal of eight unique toy designs, this limited-time promotion is designed to sell out quickly at participating locations.

The Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal is available now while supplies last, offering fans a limited opportunity to collect the entire set.
