A first look featurette has been unveiled for The Death of Robin Hood, offering audiences a sneak peek at this darker interpretation of the classic tale. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film features Hugh Jackman in the lead role, portraying an older version of Robin Hood.

This thriller reimagines the iconic Robin Hood narrative in a more somber and emotional light.

In this adaptation, Robin Hood is not the heroic figure typically depicted in folklore. Instead, he is an aging man grappling with the repercussions of a violent past. The plot follows him after a severe injury, as he is cared for by a mysterious woman. During his recovery, he confronts the reality of his life filled with crime and violence.

The cast also features Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Skarsgård takes on the role of Little John, traditionally one of Robin Hood’s closest allies. Faith Delaney appears as Little Margaret.

The film was initially announced in May 2024, confirming Michael Sarnoski as the writer and director, with Jackman and Comer set as the main stars. Shortly thereafter, A24 secured the U.S. distribution rights following a competitive bidding process at the Marché du Film. Additional casting, including Skarsgård, Bartlett, and Jupe, was confirmed in early 2025.

Filming occurred in Northern Ireland, with locations including Belfast Harbour Studios and scenic spots like Silent Valley, Glenarm, and Murlough Bay. The movie was shot on 35mm film and wrapped production by late March 2025.

According to production updates, the film is set to premiere at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival on June 12, followed by its U.S. release by A24 on June 19.

The release of the first look featurette marks the first official opportunity for viewers to experience the film’s tone and style ahead of its festival debut.
