The director of the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot has shared insights on how Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor will differ from previous interpretations of the character.

Travis Knight emphasized that the aim was to create something original while honoring the essence of the character. He noted that Skeletor has always embodied a blend of various tones, rather than adhering to a single style.

Knight remarked, “Skeletor for me was one of the most iconic villains of the ’80s and it was because there were a variety of factors. I think most villains at that time, they looked cool or they were scary or they were funny or they were intimidating. Skeletor was all of those things, so it’s just a really interesting combination of flavors.”

He also reflected on the original voice of Skeletor, created by Alan Oppenheimer in the classic animated series. This version utilized a playful and nasal tone to balance the character’s menacing design, ensuring he wasn’t too frightening for young viewers.

For the new film, Knight collaborated with Jared Leto to develop a fresh take on Skeletor’s voice and personality. He clarified that the intention was not to imitate. He stated, “So, when I was speaking with Jared, we recognized that we wanted to honor all those aspects, including a distinctive voice and an interesting laugh, but we did not want to engage in mimicry.”

They dedicated significant time to experimenting with various ideas to determine how the character should sound. Knight explained that the focus was on crafting a voice that aligns with the film’s new tone while preserving the spirit of Skeletor.

Knight characterized this iteration of Skeletor as a figure infused with both danger and performance. He expressed, “Ultimately, we arrived at this, which I love because I think it has menace, it has theatricality, which is always a part of Skeletor.”

He elaborated that Skeletor is not merely a villain seeking power; he is also someone who behaves as if he is perpetually performing. Knight described the character as insecure, reacting strongly when he doesn’t receive the expected response from others.

Knight stated, “Ultimately, he’s a very insecure man and that becomes a part of his character. He’s a power-hungry man who’s deeply insecure and that was a fun thing to dive into and figure out how we could dramatize that character.”

The director also mentioned that the new Skeletor should be both entertaining and threatening. He highlighted the importance of balancing these elements for the film’s tone, ensuring the character remains enjoyable to watch while still exuding danger.

The reboot of Masters of the Universe aims to reintroduce the classic fantasy narrative to the big screen with a fresh cast and a modern perspective. Jared Leto takes on the role of Skeletor, continuing his career in significant film roles across various genres.

The movie is set to premiere on June 5th, and early reports indicate it is one of the most anticipated fantasy releases of the year.
