Every blockbuster sequel faces a common challenge: how to follow a film that has already delivered everything fans desired. For Marvel Studios, this question was particularly pressing after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ became a multiversal phenomenon that continues to be discussed years later.

The 2021 movie brought Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield together with Tom Holland for the first time, creating a spectacle that seemed nearly impossible to surpass. Naturally, attention turned to how Marvel would navigate the next chapter of Holland’s Spider-Man saga.

Kevin Feige revealed that the studio never aimed to outdo it. During a D23 panel celebrating 65 years of Spider-Man, the Marvel Studios president shared the philosophy behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ from the outset.

“When we made Brand New Day, we set out saying, ‘Well, we’ll never make more than No Way Home, never make it bigger than No Way Home. So, let’s just go deeper and make it special,” Feige said, per Total Film.

This is a notable admission from a studio known for its escalating spectacles, as it chose to focus on intimacy rather than grandiosity for this latest Spider-Man installment.

Feige traced this concept back to the set of ‘No Way Home,’ recalling a moment that resonated with him during production. He remembered sitting on a golf cart outside the shoot, observing Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Holland together and realizing something significant about their chemistry.

“Looking at [Zendaya and Jacob and Tom], that trio is as iconic as the three Spider-Men. And now Brand New Day has proved that,” Feige added, emphasizing the film’s emotional focus on that trio rather than a larger multiversal cast.

This approach became the emotional foundation of ‘Brand New Day,’ centering the story on the relationships between Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned instead of pursuing another crossover event. It marks a significant shift for a franchise that had just delivered what many consider its biggest crowd-pleasing moment.

Regardless of the strategy, audiences clearly responded positively. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened domestically with $360 million, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million debut to become the biggest opening weekend in box office history.

The film’s success has continued, with ‘Brand New Day’ already crossing $2 billion globally, outpacing ‘No Way Home’s final theatrical total of $1.9 billion, according to Box Office Mojo figures.

These results suggest that Feige’s philosophy of “deeper, not bigger” resonated well beyond critical acclaim. Instead of chasing the scale of three Spider-Men sharing the screen, Marvel focused on the emotional depth of a trio audiences had grown to love, resulting in one of the studio’s most significant commercial successes.

For a franchise built on continuously raising the stakes, this serves as a reminder that bigger isn’t always the only way to achieve a successful follow-up.
