New Data Challenges Disney+’s ‘Wonder Man’ Cancellation Justification
Marvel’s relationship with its Disney+ television lineup has become increasingly complex in 2026, with numerous high-profile projects under scrutiny regarding the studio’s decisions on renewals and cancellations. One of the most controversial choices has been the abrupt cancellation of one of the platform’s most acclaimed original series.
‘Wonder Man‘ premiered on Disney+ in January to rave reviews, earning Yahya Abdul-Mateen II an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Simon Williams. The show appeared to be gaining traction, receiving a Season 2 renewal just two months post-launch, only for Marvel to unexpectedly reverse its decision in July, citing viewership as the reason for the cancellation.
Recent data, however, complicates that narrative. According to figures released by entertainment analytics firm Luminate, ‘Wonder Man’ amassed nearly two billion minutes of watch time on Disney+ during the first half of 2026, ranking as the second most-watched original season on the platform in the U.S., only behind ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in total watch time and ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ in total views. Despite this impressive performance, Disney+ opted to cancel the series, a decision that has sparked renewed criticism given how the show compared to the rest of the platform’s original offerings.

This discrepancy aligns with Abdul-Mateen’s own comments regarding the cancellation. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor mentioned, “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers,” but he was never presented with the actual statistics behind the decision. He added, “I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with and we keep on marching forward.”
The timing of the cancellation has only added to the confusion among fans and industry analysts. Reports indicated that Season 2 contracts had already been signed and schedules cleared before Marvel and Disney decided internally that the show no longer fit their strategy, despite the earlier renewal suggesting otherwise.
Abdul-Mateen has also linked the cancellation to a broader trend he perceives within Marvel’s projects. When discussing the online discourse connecting ‘Wonder Man’s’ fate to the ongoing challenges surrounding Mahershala Ali’s long-awaited ‘Blade’ film, he remarked, “I think the optics are obvious,” adding, “If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics.”

For a series that received widespread acclaim, boasting a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score alongside its Emmy nomination, the newly revealed Luminate data reinforces the argument that factors beyond mere viewership numbers influenced Marvel’s decision. Abdul-Mateen has continued to advocate for greater transparency from the studio, previously stating that the cancellation “deserves” some “real, hard information” rather than vague explanations tied to numbers that remain unseen by anyone outside the company.
Whether Marvel will ever provide a comprehensive explanation for their decision remains uncertain, but the timing of this streaming data raises critical questions about how the studio handles its Black-led superhero projects.
