Long before Gal Gadot became a household name thanks to the Lasso of Truth, she was just another actress vying for a role in one of the most physically demanding blockbusters of the past two decades. George Miller’s ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘ famously put numerous actors through an intense and unconventional casting process before finalizing its ensemble, and it turns out Gadot was much closer to a different career path than many fans might realize.

This revelation comes as Gadot promotes her upcoming film ‘The Runner,’ which is set to debut on Prime Video on September 2. During her promotional tour, she shared a long-buried Hollywood audition story that has since taken the internet by storm.

In an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with host Josh Horowitz, Gadot disclosed that she auditioned for the role of Furiosa alongside Tom Hiddleston, in a session that lasted an astonishing four hours. Recalling the audition, Gadot described her trip to London and walking into a stunning home-turned-office, where she and Hiddleston spent hours working through material for Miller directly.

The physical intensity of the audition left a lasting impression on Gadot. “We came to London, and I remember walking into this beautiful home in London, into this office, and we stayed there for four hours,” she shared during the podcast. She mentioned arriving bundled in layers for the chilly London weather, only to leave in a tank top after the grueling session, calling the work “so intensive” given how much material they filmed together.

Gadot praised her scene partner from that long-ago audition, calling Hiddleston “such an incredible actor” and noting that she hadn’t known much about him at the time aside from his reputation as a respected theater performer in England. Despite feeling confident about her audition, the role ultimately went to Charlize Theron, who starred opposite Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky in the final 2015 film.

Reflecting on missing out on the part, Gadot acknowledged that Miller had a specific vision that didn’t include her or Hiddleston, explaining that the director “really knew” what he wanted for the role. She also revealed she was unaware that Jeremy Renner had gone through a similar audition process for the film, highlighting the extensive search Miller conducted for the right Furiosa and Max.

This story adds to the growing collection of behind-the-scenes casting tales from ‘Fury Road’s’ notoriously rigorous audition process. Michael Fassbender has previously described his own audition for the film as one of the worst experiences of his career, recalling a painful session after arriving late and working with Miller’s demanding acting coach.

Interestingly, while Hiddleston never made it into the ‘Mad Max’ universe, his former Marvel co-star Chris Hemsworth eventually did, taking on the role of villain Dementus in the 2024 prequel ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.’ This connection adds a strange symmetry to Gadot’s story, even if the specific pairing she and Hiddleston tested for never made it to the screen.

With ‘The Runner’ now set to premiere on Prime Video, Gadot’s candid reflection offers fans a rare glimpse into how differently her career—and the ‘Mad Max’ franchise itself—could have unfolded had Miller’s vision landed elsewhere.
