‘Street Fighter’ Star Jean-Claude Van Damme Celebrates His 66th Birthday
Jean-Claude Van Damme remains one of the most recognizable action stars in the industry. For decades, this Belgian martial artist has been a staple in the genre, and fans continue to honor him. Each year on October 18, this admiration resurfaces with full force.
This year marks a significant milestone. Born Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg in Brussels on October 18, 1960, the actor celebrated his 66th birthday on Sunday. Social media was flooded with tributes, and one particular short clip has gained traction.
The 7-second video features Van Damme in what looks like a bright, contemporary living space, poised to blow out the candle on his birthday cake. Dressed in a navy robe adorned with his initials, along with a dark cap and sunglasses, he exudes the cool-guy vibe his fans adore. The robe complements the cake, which is embellished with his initials in gold lettering.
The cake itself is a striking blue creation, lavishly decorated with gold coins, cash, and small figurines. A “Happy Birthday” message wraps around the base, adding a playful yet extravagant touch to the celebration. It’s a fitting way for ‘The Muscles from Brussels’ to commemorate another year.
Van Damme’s journey to stardom began when his father enrolled him in a Shotokan karate school at the age of 10. By 18, he had earned a black belt and competed in karate and kickboxing, achieving a record of 18 wins, all by knockout, and just one loss. At 16, he also embraced ballet, studying it for five years, which contributed to his renowned flexibility.
After relocating to the United States in the early 1980s, he found his breakthrough role in ‘Bloodsport’ in 1988. The film, produced by Menahem Golan, reportedly grossed $65 million and catapulted Van Damme to fame. He quickly followed up with hits like ‘Kickboxer’, ‘Lionheart’, ‘Double Impact’, ‘Universal Soldier’, and ‘Timecop’.
His most notable video game role came in 1994 when he portrayed Guile in ‘Street Fighter’. This performance has since achieved cult status.
Van Damme’s later career has showcased a surprising diversity. In ‘JCVD’, a 2008 film by Mabrouk El Mechri, he played a fictionalized version of himself, earning critical acclaim. The film is set to arrive on HBO Max on March 20, 2026, allowing a new generation to discover it.
He also joined Sylvester Stallone in ‘The Expendables 2’ and lent his voice to a character in ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’. The 2018 release of ‘Kickboxer: Retaliation’ garnered the best reviews of his career. More recently, he starred in the French action comedy ‘The Gardener’ last year.
The actor shows no signs of slowing down. He is set to star in ‘Raid Pacific’, a WWII action epic directed by Steven Luke, where he plays submarine captain William Pierce. The film is set in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, with Pierce tasked with navigating a Marine raider unit through enemy waters. A release window has yet to be announced.
His previous work is also receiving renewed attention. A24 is developing a remake of ‘Bloodsport’ from writer and director Michaela Coel, highlighting the original film’s lasting impact. For a movie that began with a legendary splits-in-the-producer’s-office story, this is a remarkable legacy.
While this could easily be dismissed as just another celebrity birthday post, the response reflects Van Damme’s enduring status in pop culture. He remains one of the few action stars from his generation capable of bringing joy with a single image of a robe, a cap, and a cake.
Fans clearly share this sentiment, celebrating the star who brought them ‘Bloodsport’ and ‘Kickboxer’ every October 18. For action movie enthusiasts, another year for Van Damme is a perfect reason to revisit the classics.
